bearing fix

A position fix found from the intersection of two or more bearings to charted landmarks. The bearings can be taken with a magnetic or gyro compass, or by electronic bearing line (EBL) on a radar. In some cases, a bearing can be established by a natural range.

Three bearings will yield a triangle (called cocked hat), and the position will normally be taken as some point within that triangle. If the individual variances or uncertainties of each of the bearings is known, and we care to optimize the measurement, we can compute the Most Likely Position from Three LOPs, but this is not often carried out in practice.
