GPX File

This is a file type devoted to exchanging GPS information. There are subcategories of waypoints, routes, and tracks. Each of these in turn can be very simple or include many parameters. A waypoint might, for example, include a name, a description, a comment, an icon style, icon color, and more. There is an extended discussion with references in the Wikipedia on GPS Exchange files.

Search our navigation blog on GPX to find articles on the use of this file type. A main application mariners have with this is to create a route on the computer, where it is easy and precise, then save as a GPX file to move to the ships navigation system or to a handheld unit—with the latter, we need to check the manual to learn the procedure for the units in hand.

The website gpsvisualizer.com offers ways to convert these files or to build them from CSV or text data, and other manipulations.
