numerical weather prediction

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) uses mathematical models of the atmosphere and oceans to predict the weather and sea state based on current weather conditions. Global data are collected every 6 hr to seed the computer models, with latest observations. Global forecasts extend out 16 days; high resolution forecasts extent out 18 hr; and climatic forecasts extend out 6 months.

There is an informative review of NWP on the wiki. Also an excellent overview of the models is available to mariners compliments of Luckgrib.

See individual models: Global Forecast System (GFS); High Resolution Rapid Refresh model (HRRR); Real Time Ocean Forecasts system (RTOF); Climatic Forecast System (CFS).
