reflectivity

This is a grib2 parameter that describes the intensity of simulated weather radar. It is usually a better indicator of squalls than is simple rain forecast, and definitely better than trying to interpret the complex convection parameters. Sometimes called Composite Radar Reflectivity (REFC). For intense squalls we look for REFC > 40 or so, with a sharp gradient in values. See our text Modern Marine Weather.

Reflectivity is given in global forecasts from GFS and in local forecasts from NAM (CONUS) and HRRR. The NBM forecasts include a parameter called thunderstorm probability in place of this one.
