circle of position

A line of position that is curved into a circle. These are obtained only rarely in celestial navigation from high-altitude sights or distance off by vertical sextant angle. They are more frequently used in coastal navigation from various distance off measurements, and especially in radar range measurements. More often that not, we use just a segment or arc of the full circle.

See Line of Position.
