advanced LOP

A Line of Position that has been shifted forward in time on the chart or plotting sheet to correct for the boat's motion since the time of the sight. If we shift an LOP backwards in time it is called a "retired LOP."

The processes are called advancing an LOP and retiring an LOP. Both are the same plotting maneuver, just going opposite ways on the course made good track. Generally an advanced LOP would be labeled 1207 --> 1315 to mark the two times, or log 765.2 --> 788.5 to label the LOPs with log readings instead of times. See also Running Fix.
