variable range marker

An electronic means of measuring the radar range of a target with an expanding range ring circle. To operate it, adjust the radius of the circle until it overlaps the target and read the range from numbers on the radar screen. This is a primary working tool of radar navigation and collision avoidance. It is usually controlled by buttons or by a cursor. See also electronic bearing line and electronic range and bearing line.
