bar 1. A unit of pressure accepted temporarily for use with the International System of Units; 1 bar is equal to 100,000 Pascals. The more conventional unit used in meteorology is the millibar, which is one thousandth of a bar, or 100 Pascals. Hecto means 100, and hence the unit of hectopascals is the same as millibars. 2. See cloud bar, sometimes referred to as "bar" of the storm. 3. A ridge or mound of sand, gravel, or other unconsolidated material below the high water level, especially at the mouth of a river or estuary, or lying a short distance from and usually parallel to the beach, and which may obstruct navigation. |
