bbs Used now almost as an acronym for computer "bulletin board services." A "BBS" is a central computer, associated software, and operator (called the sysop for system operator) that coordinates electronic mail as well as posting and distributing messages and discussion to its members. Some also provide a repository of software and other files that can be "downloaded" by members into their own computers. Some BBSs are free and open to the public, others must be subscribed to with some hourly, monthly or annual dues. In either arrangement, users generally set up an account with a user name and a password. For details and specific BBS data line numbers, see Source Book under computer sources.
