British Admiralty

That branch of the British government that publishes or causes to be published resources on maritime subjects. This may well be just a common US term for this agency or group of agencies, equivalent, I believe, to the US Department of the Navy. In the UK, it seems to be referred to simply as the "Admiralty."

The agency that actually publishes things like the Admiralty Charts, Admiralty List of Radio Signals, Admiralty Sailing Directions, and so forth is called the Hydrographic Office of the Navy. In any event, when the term "British Admiralty" is used in the US it implies the official British government edition of some maritime reference.

British Admiralty products have always had the highest reputation for quality. They are kept up to date, in many cases better than the corresponding references from other sources. They also have the reputation of being very expensive publications. They are nearly always printed in hard cover, usually dark blue with gold-colored lettering.
