broach Most generally, when a vessel is knocked down by any means. Usually refers to a "round up" into the wind on big waves, or when a spinnaker goes out of control in strong winds which can knock the boat down in either direction. Usually the term is used for an actual knock down, as opposed to just a round up which was rescued somewhat before a knock down. The rescue itself, depending on its level of grace, can sometimes be called a "Chinese fire drill." See discussion (of round up process) in G126. See discussion of the sailing dynamics of broaching in Sail Power by Ross and Sailing Theory and Practice by Marchaj listed in the Source Book. |
