duration

The length of time that the wind blows. Wave height increases with duration. Roughly speaking, it takes a duration in hours equal to the wind speed in knots for the seas to develop to nearly their full size (20 knots will take 20 hours, etc.). See the wave computer in RES-2 for more specific relationships between wave height and duration.
