infrared

Having a frequency immediately beyond the red of the visible spectrum — said of rays of longer wavelength than visible light, but shorter than radio waves. (Ultraviolet rays are those immediately beyond the other end of the visible spectrum.) Heat waves are infrared waves. Satellite photos in the infrared range depict the temperatures of the atmosphere and land. The temperatures of clouds are a measure of their altitudes. See RES-1 on interpreting satellite photos.
