instability The state or property of submitting to change or of tending to increase the departure from original conditions after being disturbed. Thus, the atmosphere is in a state of instability when the vertical distribution of temperature is such that an air particle, if given an upward or downward impulse, tends to keep moving with increasing speed from its original level. The opposite is stability.
