jet stream Relatively strong winds (50 knots or greater) concentrated in a narrow stream in the atmosphere. It usually refers only to a quasi-horizontal stream of maximum winds imbedded in the middle latitude westerlies, and concentrated in the high troposphere. The jet stream is typically located at an altitude equivalent to some 200 to 300 mb, which places it well above the 500 mb surface. See 500-mb map. |
