I will be cruising for a week in the San Juan Islands the first week of October. I am looking for any recommendations for finding local knowledge - both for navigation and suggested itineraries and places not to miss. Of particular interest/concern are tidal currents. I have some experience with them sailing in Cape Cod (and of course ASA 105) but would appreciate knowing particular things to watch out for.
Thanks!

We will get back with some specifics. In the meantime, you can check this local magazine current and back issues https://48north.com/magazine/

there is a search field at the top of each edition to enter, say "San Juan" to see if anything new and interesting going on.

also will you have a computer on board at the time with a GPS connected to it?

Currents are indeed a big factor, but we have a lot of resources to add.

See also: https://www.waggonerguidebooks.com/cruisingthesanjuans.html

for a list of cruising books on the area.

The Whale Museum in Friday Harbor is a popular visit.

Best book on currents for the area is the Canadian Current Atlas. We have 2 left in stock at $29. (It maybe going out of print. It is over $40 at Amazon and we cannot get anymore.)

This is for planning routes. Current data for specific channels should be from NOAA, www.tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov . We have recent articles online about changes there. See recent posts at www.starpath.com/articles . The free navigation program called qtVlm has an excellent presentation of tide and currents, but you must load the harmonics first. We have videos on the process at www.starpath.com/videos in the qtVlm playlist.

Thank you! I just ordered the Canadian Current Atlas. Yes, I will have a tablet with GPS. I plan to install the Navionics program, unless you recommend a different one.
