black box radar

A new terminology that implies the radar system is made up from user-selected modular components, such as antenna, radar processor (the black box), display, and control console. The latter are looking more and more like computer keyboards, and the displays more and more like computer screens in this design approach, which is gaining popularity in electronic chart systems and other navigation instruments as well. Indeed, one aspect of black box design is the ability to use any computer monitor for the radar display, thus protecting the user from the obsolescence of any particular video display and offering waterproof flat-panel options.
