mark

Mark often means some point of interest (POI) on a nautical chart. If such a mark is used as part of a route, it is usually called a waypoint.

Mark can also refer to an aid to navigation, such as a daymark, which is a coded graphic sign on a post, explained in the Light List.

As a verb, it is sometimes used in navigation as a way to communicate a specific observation, such as the time of a sextant sight or compass bearing. One person does the measurement, and when they think it is right they say "mark" and their assistant records the precise time of the event.
