floating EBL

The name used by some radars to identify the option of moving the reference point for the EBL and VRM away from the center of the screen. This is a relatively new option on modern radars, even many small craft radars, that is a very handy feature. It allows you to accurately and automatically measure the range and bearing between any two targets on the radar, or to measure the orientation of any long prominent feature. Radar navigation and collision avoidance often calls for this type of measurement, and this tool makes it much simpler. Else we need to use some form of portable range marker for the ranges, and either a protractor or parallel index for the bearings. Also called an "ERBL", see "Electronic Range and Bearing Line".
