bobbing a light

Means quickly lowering the height of eye and raising it again when a navigational light is first sighted to determine if the observer is at the geographic range of the light.

Sometimes just a little change will do, or go from cockpit to cabin top.

See our Navigation Workbook, 18465tr exercise 3-16 for numerical example.
