| up-screen Motion of a radar target in the general direction that the heading line is pointed. In head-up mode, the heading line points straight up, toward the top of the radar screen, and these targets are indeed moving up the physical screen, but in north-up mode, the heading line could be pointed in any direction (your heading at the time) and thus up-screen targets could actually be moving toward the bottom of the physical screen. The use of this valuable terminology requires us to think of the top of the radar screen as the tip of the heading line. Up-screen targets are further classified as quarter targets (moving up-screen diagonal to the heading line) or stern targets (moving up-screen parallel to the heading line). See also down-screen. |
