mares tails

Long slender streaks of cirrus thickening into cirrostratus, and then gradually lowering into watery altostratus.

Also used more generally to describe cirrus uncinus clouds, which are tufted cirrus showing straight or curved feathery filaments. See G436. These clouds can often indicate the speeds and directions of winds aloft, which in turn can aid in forecasting surface weather.

See crossed winds rule. See also virga.
