radiosonde

Instrument package carried by unmanned balloons and containing devices to measure and transmit temperature, pressure, and relative humidity. These data play a key role in establishing the vertical profile of weather information which is crucial to making up the actual surface analysis and especially forecasts. Overall system often called a "weather balloon."

Measurements are made 00z and 12z daily, which adds significance to the forecasts at those times. See
