radiotelephone

The name often applied to marine radios used for voice communication. It applies to both the VHF and the HF radios. It is also used to describe the class of radio emissions used for voice communications. E = radiotelephony. F3E = VHF voice and J3E = HF voice. See Radio Primer.

A pertinent part of the Navigation Rules is called "Vessel bridge-to-bridge radiotelephone regulations." Other pertinent regulations are in CFR 47, Part 80, Stations in the Maritime Services, located in volume titled "Part 80 to end, Telecommunications."
