Satnav

The abbreviation for the Transit satellite navigation system, no longer in use. It gave accurate electronic fixes each time one of six satellites crosses the horizon at an adequate height, typically every few hours depending on latitude. Navigation between satellite passes must be done by other means, primarily dead reckoning. In 1986, Transit receivers cost from $1,500 to $3,000 or so. The Transit system was replaced with the more accurate and continuous coverage of the GPS satellite system in the mid1980's or early 1990's. See Global Positioning System.
