visibility reference

Selected objects at known distances used as points to determine visibility. In the past, airport reports of visibility were determined by noting which of the their references could be seen from the tower. These days, visibility is determined electronically from scattered light beams. To determine visibility underway, however, this is still the standard procedure. Use radar or GPS to determine present position and from there note what landmarks can be seen and how far away they are.
