winter The coldest season of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere, Winter begins astronomically at the winter solstice and ends at the vernal equinox. In the Southern Hemisphere the limits are the summer solstice and the autumnal equinox. From a meteorological point of view, the definition of Winter varies with the locality and the year.
