zulu

A time label designating Greenwich mean time as in 12Z or 1144Z. The term stems from a military convention of labeling time zones with letters. The zone description ZD = 0 spanning the Greenwich meridian was assigned the letter Z.

The phonetic alphabet (Z = zulu) is in G237.

Conversions of valid map times between GMT and local times is covered in G188.

Other than this special case of zulu, time zones are rarely labeled with letters these days in practical navigation or weather. The zulu reference to time, however, is still quite common.

In short, 18Z = 1800 GMT = 1800 Universal time.
