speed made good (SMG)

The average speed of a vessel from point to point on a chart determined from the distance between two points divided by the time interval between them. If the vessel's track had course changes in it during this time interval, this would be the actual speed from starting point to ending point regardless of course changes made.

We distinguish this from speed over ground (SOG), which is an instantaneous value of SMG derived from GPS computations just seconds or less apart.
