parallel targets

Targets moving on the radar screen parallel to the heading line, meaning they do not get any closer or farther from our line of travel as time passes. Parallel targets moving up-screen are called stern targets, moving down-screen they are called head-on targets. A special case of parallel target is one that is not moving at all on the radar screen as we proceed, which is a target with the identical course and speed we have (a buddy boat). See also crossing targets.
