flashing light

In the Navigation Rules, "Flashing light" means a light flashing at regular intervals at a frequency of 120 flashes or more per minute.

On charts, a flashing light (Fl) means one that is normally off and then comes on for a short time, and then off again. With two flashes it would be Fl(2) or Fl(3), etc. This always refers to a light of the same color. If a light has two colors, then its charted characteristic description will have the abbreviation (Al) for alternating. See alternating light.
