raster chart

A type of electronic chart made from a bitmap image of a paper chart scanned into a computer. Viewed on the screen it is identical to the paper chart, which is an advantage over vector charts to navigators accustomed to the look and detail of paper charts, but they have the disadvantage of being large files, and they do not offer the display versatility of vector charts. Raster charts can only be viewed in a compatible software program. Topographic maps and aerial photo maps viewable in some e-chart programs are always raster charts. See vector charts.
