NAO Tables

A nickname for Nautical Almanac Office Sight Reduction Tables which are included in each edition of the Nautical Almanac. The use of these tables is covered in Sec. 11.11 of the course book. See discussion under Davies Tables.

We recently learned that there has been an ongoing claim that the NAO tables were based on an existing set of tables briefly mentioned in early editions of Bowditch. We have not seen the 1980s version of the cited tables and so have no insights into this. Knowing the people involved with the production of the NAO tables it is hard to imagine they were copied from any one source. The primary math involved has been used in several sets of tables long before either set, so it is not a surprise that the results would be similar, but that certainly does not fully answer the question.
