Two vessels can meet in one of three ways: head to head, crossing, or overtaking. See head-on for discussion of the first. That is generally on recipricol courses within a few degrees. Over taking is coming up from behind in the cone that is 2 pts aft of the beam. From overtaking zoneforward to head-on zone is called crossing.
