| georeference The process of adding digital coordinates to a digital form of a graphic map. This is useful for turing a weather map into something we can load into a navigation program and is also done with Google Earth images. This can be accomplished with programs like Expedition or OpenCPN in a very quick way. Ocens MetMapper is designed for this function as a stand alone product. Once a file is georeferenced you can read lat-lon from it directly, set waypoints, measure range and bearing, and so on. Also you can have your GPS position show up right on the weather map. You can also georeference pilot charts and even arial photographs. We have an article on line on how to convert any image into a BSB chart format that will be read in any navigation program, but the process is a bit tedious. |
