METAR

An acronym for internationally standardized weather reports for aviators. The letters come from the French name, which translates as: Aviation Routine Weather Report. We use METARS and TAFs for barometer calibration. An entry such as SLP176 means the sea level pressure is 1017.7 mb (hectopascals). See TAF.

Some say acronym comes from METeorological Aerodrome Report, but this is not quite the case.

US METARS can be found at http://adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov/metars/java. They are typically updated hourly.
