kamal

A hand made device for measuring the absolute or relative height of a star or other celestial body. They originated in days of Sinbad the Sailor along the Red Sea and East African Coast sailing north and south on the Monsoons. Using the North Star sailors could have a mark on the kamal for each of the major ports along the coastline.
