differential GPS An electronic nav aid that is an enhancement of normal GPS with an additional signal that removes a degree of uncertainly in the position accuracy. DGPS positions are more accurate than unmodified ones, but its enhancement of the accuracy of course and speed over ground are usually more significant. Modern GPS, however, is generally accurate enough for practical navigation without this enhancement. Abbreviation:  DGPS
