alternating light

A navigation light on a post or lighthouse that has more than one color, abbreviated "Al." Examples are: such as "Al WR 24s" or "Al Oc & Fl R 20s."

Alternating lights have a complex presentation in ENC depending on the brightness of the light and what causes the alternation, i.e., is it one light with two colors, or two lights, each with its own color. If one of the lights has a nominal range greater than 9 nmi, then it will have a large ring symbol, else it will be either one or two tear drops. If two, they are at 45º and 135º.

We will add more here shortly. There are several types of LITCHR that refer to alternating lights, but only 28 and 29 imply the conventional meaning of more than one color.

17 occulting alternating

18 long-flash alternating

19 flash alternating

28 alternating (continuous)

29 fixed and alternating flashing

Later we define these and show examples in our training charts.
