| down-screen Motion of a radar target in the general direction that is opposite to the way the heading line is pointed. In head-up mode, the heading line points straight up, toward the top of the radar screen, and these targets are indeed moving down the physical screen, but in north-up mode, the heading line could be pointed in any direction (your heading at the time) and thus down-screen targets could actually be moving toward the top of the physical screen. The use of this valuable terminology requires us to think of the top of the radar screen as always that part at the tip of the heading line. Down-screen targets are further classified as bow targets (moving down-screen diagonal to the heading line) or head-on targets (moving down-screen parallel to the heading line). See also up-screen. |
