boxing the compass The process of listing or reciting the points of a compass card. The term arose after 1851 and before 1911, but we have not found out when or where it was first used. In the 1851 Bowditch “boxing” was a verb meaning to back wind the jib. In 1911 edition it was used as is done today. A compass point is 11.25º See illustrated discussion at Starpath Nav Blog.
