zone balancing This term is used to describe the process of adding extra weights to the backside of a compass card to compensate for the dip of the compass needle caused by the vertical component of the Earth's magnetic field. The horizontal component makes the compass work; the vertical component just gets in the way. See our course notes on zone balancing. |
