windvane

A device that measures the apparent wind direction, usually just an arrow with a large flat feather section mounted at the mast head or other high location in clear air on the vessel. Often known to sailors as Windex after a Davis brand masthead device. They measure the apparent wind angle relative to the centerline of the vessel.

The angle reported when measured digitally will be in error slightly when the vessel is heeled. See also Apparent wind angle.
