TWS (true wind speed)

Wind relative to a fixed point on the earth. Wind relative to a moving point is called apparent wind or relative wind. True wind must be calculated from a vector triangle with sides: true wind, apparent wind and boat speed. This can be solved graphically or directly by computation.

See discussion in RES-5 on wind conversions and G113 for true wind equations and examples. RES-5 shows step by step how to solve the vector triangle for true wind.
