elevation datum

This is the vertical datum used on nautical charts that applies only to spot soundings and elevation contours. It is usually mean sea level, which can, to a good approximation, be considered equal to the midpoint between mean high water and mean low water.

Recall that charted light heights and bridge clearances are given relative to the "height datum" which is mean high water. These two datums are not the same.
