obstruction

In electronic navigational chart (ENC) terminology, an obstruction is anything other than a rock or wreck that you can run into that interferes with your navigation, usually with the implication that it is underwater and not visible. It could be a stump, an abandoned pipeline or part of one, man made structure underwater.

There are obvious obstructions that are not called "obstruction" because they have other ENC object names, such as wreck, rock, pipeline, pile.

See hazard.
