plan position indicator A somewhat outdated term for the active front face of the radar that shows the targets. A plan view of an object is the general term for the top view, looking down, which is schematically what this is intended to represent—a chart-like view of what is around you. This term is now more often referred to as the radar screen even though modern radar screens typically include much more data than just the radar image itself. Abbreviation:  PPI
