unstabilized radar

This is the name used for traditional radar without a heading sensor input, as opposed to radar with a north-up or course-up displays, the latter of which are referred to as stabilized radar. In unstabilized radar (conventional head-up display), if the vessel heading yaws in a seaway, the recorded positions of targets on the radar screen also shift proportionally, which ultimately smears out their target trails. This is typical small-craft radar behavior, so the term "unstabilized" is a bit misleading. It is more useful for ship navigators whose radars typically have been stabilized for many years now.
