| advection fog A type of fog caused by the advection of moist air over a cold surface, and the consequent cooling of that air to below its dew point. Sea fog is a very common advection fog that is caused by warm moist air in transport over a cold body of water. Steam fog from cold air moving across warm water is sometimes referred to as a type of advection fog (at least in some USCG questions), since it does involve the advection of air masses, however the opposite type (warm air over cold water) is the standard definition. See WXT ART-19 on fog and WXT ART-13 on humidity. |
