| air mass An extensive body of air with fairly uniform (horizontal) physical properties, especially temperature and humidity. In its developing stage the properties of the air mass are determined by the characteristics of the region in which it forms. It is a cold or warm air mass as it is colder or warmer than the surrounding air. Air masses are often formed in stationary Highs. See air-mass classification and the discussion in the various practice questions on air masses and the atmosphere. See also WXT ART-13 on humidity. WXT G140 shows typical air masses of North America and adjacent ocean areas. |
